The free festival Das Schloss Rockt was already running hot when the Italian industrial metal machine known as Motel Transylvania emerged from the shadows and took command of the stage. Founded in 2014 in the coastal city of Savona, the band arrived with the confidence of people who knew exactly what was about to happen.
You could feel it before a single note was played. Suddenly the crowd seemed to be dressed almost entirely in black and green, as if some underground congregation had gathered in secret and chosen this very evening to reveal itself. Something was brewing in front of the Münster castle, and everybody knew it.
Then came „Caligo.“
The first song landed like a controlled demolition. Any lingering thoughts of a relaxed summer festival vanished instantly beneath crushing riffs, industrial grooves, and enough energy to power a small city. From that moment on, the party belonged to Motel Transylvania.
The band tore through a set packed with fan favorites. „A Better Place“ had the crowd singing along, „Obscene“ hit like a punch to the ribs, and „Burning Lust“ turned the castle grounds into a sea of raised fists and moving bodies. By the time they closed with „Generation Lost,“ the audience was fully in their grasp, cheering for one more song despite knowing the end had arrived.
What impressed me most was not just the music, but the atmosphere. Motel Transylvania have that rare ability to make a large crowd feel like part of the show. Every riff, every chorus, every beat seemed designed to pull people deeper into the experience until nobody was standing still anymore.
The biggest surprise came after the set. I had the chance to spend some time talking with the band, and behind the dark aesthetics and thunderous sound are some of the nicest people you could hope to meet. Friendly, genuine, and grateful for every fan who came out to see them.
On stage they are a force of nature. Off stage they are absolute gentlemen.
